Sewage leaking into Big Will’s Creek

┬áHealth officials are warning people to avoid swimming and fishing in parts of Big Will’s Creek in the Terrapin Hills Country Club and Subdivision in Fort Payne.

Raw and partially treated sewage from from the subdivision’s private sewage system is overflowing into the creek, according to the DeKalb County Health Department. Officials from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management were not available to answer questions about how much sewage has spilled into the creek.

Anyone who has contact with the waters should wash with soap and water, according the health department.

Contaminated water can contain E. coli and other organisms that can cause diarrhea, respiratory illness, urinary tract infections and other diseases.
